Vector Graphics

  • Vector Graphics are created from mathematical formulas used to define lines, shapes and curves.Edited in Draw programs. Shapes can be Edited by moving points called nodes (drawing points).

Vector Graphic Softwares :
  • Xara Xtreme
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • CorelDraw
  • Inkscape

Vector File Formats :
  • WMF : Windows Metafile
  • AI : Adobe Illustrator
  • CDR : Corel Draw
  • EPS : Encapsulated Postscript
  • SVG : Scalable Vector Graphics
  • DXF : AutoCAD

Advantages :
  • Resolution Independent :
    • Regardless of how much the image is enlarged or reduced, the image defination and quality remains the same.

  • Small File Sizes :
    • As they have small file sizes this allows them to load quickly.

Disadvantages :
  • Lower color quality than raster images.they do not support as many colors.
  • Not good for photographic images.

What is Raster?
  • a raster graphics image representing generally rectangular grid of pixels, viewable via a monitor, paper, or other display medium.
  • A raster is technically characterized by the width and height of the image in pixels and by the number of bits per pixel
  • Most computer images are stored in raster graphics formats or compressed variations, including GIF, JPEG, and PNG, which are popular on the World Wide Web.
  • Lose the image quality when enlarging.
