Constancy

  • Constancy means the state or quality of being unchanged.
  • Moon looks big when nearer to earth and looks small when far from earth, but actually the size of the moon unchange.

Visual Constancy
  • The ability to recognize objects even as their size, shape, color, or orientation change.Visual constancy is our ability to perceive that an object remains the same, even when the object projects different images onto our retinas in our eyes. There are different types of visual constancy, for example shape, color, size, brightness and location constancy.

Size Constancy :
  • Within a certain range, people’s perception of one particular object’s size will not change, regardless of changes in distance or the video size change on the retina.

Shape Constancy :
  • It is similar to size constancy in that it relies largely on the perception of distance. Regardless of changes to an object's orientation (such as a door opening), the shape of the object is perceived the same. That is the actual shape of the object is sensed as changing but then perceived as the same.
  • Despite viewing the door at differnt angles we know that the door remains rectangular.

Color Constancy :
  • It is a feature of the human color perception system which ensures that the color of an object remains similar under varying conditions and is the result of a very complicated 'calculation' by an unconsciously working mechanism within our central nervous system.
  • despite the varying shades of orange, yellow and green that we see in each picture, we perceive the bowls of fruit to be the equal.

  • Color may be visually changed for different sun lights, but original color remains same.
